BAYAN LEPAS - Seramai 43 pelajar Farmasi Kolej Teknologi Pulau (KTP) mengadakan kempen kesihatan umum selama tiga hari berturut-turut bermula Jumaat lalu.

Kempen ini melibatkan pensyarah dan pelajar bekerjasama bagi menyebarkan maklumat kepada orang ramai mengenai kepentingan menjaga kesihatan diri.

Kempen yang berlangsung di Queensbay Mall itu turut menampilkan pameran poster mengenai rokok, tekanan perasaan dan diabetes.

Lebih menarik, orang ramai di situ boleh mendapatkan pemeriksaan tekanan darah dan kandungan gula dalam darah secara percuma. Ketua Projek Pelajar, C Raja, 21 berkata, tujuan utama kempen ini diadakan adalah untuk menga- jak orang ramai agar menjaga kesihatan diri.

“Masyarakat selalunya tidak peka pemeriksaan kesihatan maka kami mengambil inisiatif untuk mengadakan kempen ini di pusat membeli belah yang sering menjadi tumpuan umum pada hari cuti.

“Selain itu, kami sebagai pelajar ingin mendedahkan skop ahli farmasi sebenarnya amat meluas,” katanya.

Menurut Raja, ahli farmasi bukan hanya sekadar menjual ubat di farmasi malah boleh melakukan pelbagai tugas seperti kerja makmal malah boleh turut berkecimpung dalam apa bidang sekalipun.
Salah seorang pengunjung, Suhaimi Abdullah, 43 berkata, kempen seumpama ini wajar diteruskan pada masa akan datang.

“Selalunya kita sibuk bekerja dan sampai tiada masa untuk melakukan pemeriksaan kesihatan.
“Tetapi apabila kempen seperti ini dibuat di pusat beli belah, maka ini akan memberi peluang kepada orang ramai berpeluang menjalani pemeriksaan,” katanya.

7th NATIONAL HEALTH SCIENCES DEBATE 2008

Hi everyone :),

We would like to extend our invitation to your institution to participate in the 7th National Health Sciences Debate 2008. The theme this year is: "Health Care Professionals: Challenging the Role of Doctors".{   } Motions will be released two weeks before the tournament so that the teams will be able to do a bit of research. 

The tournament is opened to all university students from Malaysia and also other countries. 

Its an annual tournament and this year onwards it will be in the Malaysian Debating Calendar. (Hope we can take this opportunity to meet up every year  ).. Do let us know as soon as possible as we are limiting to 40 teams only this year.

Final Examination : Kicks off !!!

And so the final examination of semester 1 for 1st year pharmacy students starts today (7/4) . 2nd year students will face their first and second paper on the next day, 8/4.

Well, good luck everybody !!! :)

Announcement : on 18th of April, (hopefully on the evening) we will be having a so-called semester end party...involving pharmacy students and lecturers...

We hope that everyone's will not rushing for "balik kampung" as soon as the exam finished. Stay for a while ok? coz if u miss this party u have to wait for another year to experience it again...

There will also some "suprise gift(s)" from us [as memento].

Good News For Future Pharmacist

Doctors to be disallowed from dispensing medicines

KUALA LUMPUR: Soon, doctors will not be allowed to dispense medicines. Doctors will only be allowed to prescribe medications but patients will have to get the medicines from pharmacies.

Currently, doctors diagnose the disease, prescribe the medicines and their own clinics dispense them.

For almost 20 years, pharmacists have been fighting for the "return" of their right to dispense medications but had been unsuccessful for various reasons.

A pilot project on the separation of functions between doctors' clinics and pharmacies will be launched by the Ministry of Health.

It is scheduled to be launched at selected major towns with the ministry closely monitoring the strength and weaknesses of the system before implementing it nationwide.
Director-General of Health Tan Sri Dr Ismail Merican said the ministry was not able to implement this system earlier due to logistics problems, especially the shortage of pharmacists and pharmacies in the country.

"We also have to take into consideration the welfare of patients. If we have the separation, then patients must have easy accessibility to pharmacies to get their prescribed medications," he told the New Straits Times.

He said the ministry had conducted a detailed study, "Pharmacy and clinic Mapping" on various issues ranging from welfare of patients, facilities available and capability of pharmacies to meet the demand.

"We found that the logistics problem is still an issue and needs to be resolved as we do not want patients to be running around looking for pharmacies with the doctors' prescriptions," said Dr Ismail.

Furthermore, he said, the pharmacies should be able to provide quality care.

He said the ministry had been doing the study with various stakeholders, focusing on the spread of community pharmacies or pharmacy outlets in major towns, rural and remote areas.

Some 5,000 registered pharmacists are actively practising in some 1,600 pharmacies nationwide.

In 2004, there were only 3,927 registered pharmacists with about 1,540 retail pharmacies or one for every 16,445 persons.

Dr Ismail said the pilot project would be implemented in major towns based on the study where there were pharmacies near clinics.

"If the pilot project is successful, we will have to look into the existing laws to allow for the separation," he added.

India, South Korea and Taiwan have implemented the separation. Malaysian Pharmaceutical Society president John Chang Chiew Pheng said the ministry's move to conduct a pilot project was definitely a positive development which would enhance the level of healthcare delivery.

The separation, he added, would benefit patients as doctors could now focus on their clinical, diagnosing, counselling and prescription, while pharmacists could focus on educating patients on how best to optimise the usage of medicines prescribed.

Furthermore, Chang said, pharmacists could help patients choose between generic and branded drugs based on their financial situation.

"With commitment and determination we can overcome teething problems and patients can understand their medicines," he added.

He said if the government went ahead with the separation, then more pharmacies could be set up near clinics for easy accessibility to patients.

The establishment!!

27th Dec 2007 may be just another 'Thursday' to most of you guys out there, but as for us, it really is a memorial date as its the day ICT Pharmacy Students Association(IPSA) is formed!

With the election also going on the very same date, an organizational setup has been formed in order to run IPSA smoothly.

At this moment, IPSA can be said an 'illegal' pharmacy student society, but paperwork are on its way, and hopefully very soon, IPSA will be registered! Be certain of it.

This post is merely of letting your guys out there aware of IPSA existence, but once the first meeting is held, IPSA*mod will keep this blog updated with interesting post.
Coming post will be more specific about IPSA organization, aims, and EVERYTHING u wish to know about IPSA.
